This project included five slide locations on a 1.2-mile stretch of US Highway 41 in Marion County, Tennessee.  Record rainfall was causing the main alternate route of Interstate 24 to Downtown Chattanooga to fail at a rapid pace and during the Spring of 2019, Dement was allowed to close the highway for one week to build a one-lane roadway that was cut into the mountain side.  Once the temporary lane was complete, Dement and their subcontractors began repairs to all five locations. A total of 138,395 LF of soil nails were installed and 34,107 SF of Reinforced Shotcrete Facing. Four Modular Block Retaining Walls were constructed as well. The newly constructed roadway had multiple drainage crossings that were added to allow water from the mountain side to flow to designated areas. Below the roadway, 21,000 LF of horizontal drains were drilled into the mountain side to act as a dewatering system from beneath the roadway.
