At the time of contract award, the second phase modification of the I-40/I-240 interchange was the largest project ever awarded in TDOT history. The project consisted of the construction of 6 bridges, 23 retaining walls, and approximately 6 miles of interstate roadway reconstruction that included noise barrier walls, roadway lighting and ITS/Smartway communications. The bridge work was highlighted by a new 1,565’ long flyover bridge that carried I-40 westbound traffic, a new 2,322’ long flyover that carried I-40 eastbound traffic, and completely replaced the 1,145’ long I-40 bridge over the Wolf River. The I-40 eastbound flyover bridge was the fourth level of the interchange and spanned Sam Cooper Boulevard, I-240 northbound and the I-240 southbound ramp bridge. The roadway work included approximately 4 miles of I-40 reconstruction and 2 miles of I-240 reconstruction.

The project was completed with the utilization of multiple traffic phase changes and nightly/weekend lane closures. This project was completed over 7.5 months ahead of the contract deadline.
