S.R. 49 over Wells Creek

This accelerated bridge construction (ABC) project included the full replacement of the 3-span, 211’-6” long, State Route 49 bridge over Wells Creek. Construction times were limited to 3 weekend closures for abutment construction and a single 12-day closure for removal and replacement of the existing bridge. Prior to the closure work, precast bridge components were fabricated and staged for the 12-day closure. The weekend closures included the excavation, pile driving and construction of the new abutments and reopening of the road in a 56-hour period. The 12-day closure consisted of existing bridge removal, pile driving, installation of precast bridge components and closure pours to allow for the reopening of the road to traffic. The closures and the overall project were completed ahead of schedule through thorough planning and coordination with TDOT.
