I-24, removing old deck

Image 1 of 4

This award-winning accelerated bridge construction (ABC) project was the first of its kind to be constructed by TDOT.  The project included the full bridge deck removal and replacement on the I-24 bridges over Woodland and Main Street. Construction times were limited to only 1 weekend for approach pavement removals, 12 weekends for bridge deck removal and replacement, and 1 weekend for approach pavement replacement.  Construction was restricted to weekend closures due to the high traffic volumes in downtown Nashville and the location near the Tennessee Titans football stadium. Weekend closures were closely coordinated with TDOT and the City of Nashville due to the many events hosted by the City, including Titans home games, the Country Music Awards, and the Country Music Festival.

The existing deteriorating bridge decks were replaced with precast concrete deck panels that were connected together and placed on the existing concrete beams using high-strength grout and epoxy grout materials. The project was completed utilizing only 12 of the 14 available weekends for construction.
